Registers

A collection of flip-flops is termed as register. A register through these flip-flops holds information within a digital system. This information can be made available to the logic elements during the computing process. Register can store a finite number of 0-1 combinations since it is a collection of flip-flops. These combinations are called states or contents of the register. Shift registers are capable of moving information position wise upon the occurrence of a clock signal. Shift registers can be either unidirectional or bidirectional. The four possible ways of transferring information in registers are serial-in/serial-out, serial-in/parallel-out, parallel-in/parallel-out and parallel-in/serial out. Registers are commercially available as MSI components.
