Computerized power system control

The concepts of computer controlled power system emerged to facilitate security and economy. By the introduction of computer, human error factors appreciable reduced. In this system, human beings come in to picture only to interact with consumers for billing and feedback purposes. The basic components of a computerized power system control are a main computer, some remote terminal units which controls the power stations and grid substations, data storage units and output mode units. The main computer system deals with the data computation, accepts input data, stores information, processes operation and issues instructions to remote terminal units. A printer can be used as the output unit. Nowadays two computers are being used fpr remote supervision, data acquisition, controlling energy management and system security. Two computer systems are called as online computer and backup computer. For monitoring and controlling the power system, online computers are used. For offline tasks such as load forecasting and hydrothermal allocation, backup computer is used.
