History of operating system

A mainframe computer controls around 1000 desktops and huge quantity of data. This type of mainframe system is very much required in high-end web-servers, servers for electronic, business and government level establishments. Here processing of many jobs at once is the main task for the mainframe computer. OS/390is a typical operating system used in mainframe computers. Personal computers and workstations can be used as servers. Here multiple users can do simultaneous work in a network sharing both hardware and software. UNIX, LINUX and various versions of WINDOWS are examples of server operating systems. A special type of operating system is used in parallel computers, multicomputers, and multiprocessors. The different operating systems used in personal computers are various versions of WINDOWS, Macintosh, UNIX and LINUX. Well known real time operating systems are Vx Works and QNX. Palm OS and WINDOWS are embedded operating systems. Extremely small operating systems are loaded in smart cards.
