Robotics is a form of
industrial automation. An industrial robot is a general purpose programmable
machine. A robot possesses human like
characteristics. In 1973, Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory developed
the first textual robot language WAVE. Later the same organization developed a
new language called AL. First commercially available robot textual language is
VAL (Victor’s Assembly Language) in which many of the features of WAVE and AL
are retained. VAL was developed by Unimation Inc. for its PUMA robot
series. They upgraded this language (VAL
II) in the year 1984. Later IBM Corporation developed two robot languages
AUTOPASS and AML. Some other robot languages are RAIL developed by automatix,
MCL by McDonnell-Douglas and HELP by general electric company. The three basic modes of operation of a robot
language operating system are monitor mode, run mode and exit mode. The overall
supervising control is achieved by the monitor mode. For the execution of robot
program, run mode is used. The edit mode provides instructions which allow the
user to write new programs or to edit existing programs.
